Summary

Automatic compaction can drop an authorized external task. Codex submits an external task as a function_call_output with id, name and namespace but no call_id. The shared parser already recognizes that envelope as user task input, but the raw-body repairs in the Responses passthrough did not. They wrapped it as an unidentified tool result, so the routed summarizer saw [tool output for unknown call] in front of the handover and could read the task as a stray tool result.

After this change, repairUnidentifiedToolOutputItems and repairOrphanedInputItems emit a recognized external task as a plain user message before the generic orphan repair. The recognition lives in externalTaskInputResponsesContent in src/responses/task-input.ts, and the parser uses the same check, so both paths agree on what counts as task input. Image detail original becomes high, matching the translated routes. Ordinary orphaned outputs keep the existing marker.

Scope

This fixes the misclassification that the issue confirms. The issue also reports that a Claude continuation selected an already completed task again after a correct summary. This PR does not change task selection after replay, so it references the issue instead of closing it.

Refs #6764

Verification

  • bun run typecheck: pass
  • bun run structure:check: pass
  • bun run privacy:scan: pass
  • Focused responses tests (six files: external-task-input-repair, openai-responses-passthrough, responses-compaction-routing, responses-parser, responses-parser-agent-message, responses-parser-malformed-content): 426 pass, 2 fail. The two failures are the surrogate-pair byte-accounting tests in openai-responses-passthrough.test.ts. They fail the same way on origin/dev 53b8369 in this environment (Bun 1.3.14), so this change does not cause them.
  • Full bun run test was not green on this machine. Six files (the tests/claude-integration/* picker, outbound and CA tests, tests/cli/cli-access-audio-live.test.ts, tests/codex-integration/native-codex-toggle.test.ts) hit timeouts in a 667 s parallel run under load. Run alone, those six files pass: 223 pass on this branch and 223 pass on origin/dev. The full suite was not rerun locally; CI on the exact head is the full-suite evidence.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Not applicable: no auth, credential, or workflow code changed.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Complete external task inputs are now handled consistently across translated requests, native passthrough, and compaction. Valid text and image content remains in order and is represented as user input instead of being incorrectly marked as output from an unknown tool.
    • Ordinary orphaned tool outputs continue to be marked as outputs from unknown tools.
  • Documentation
    • Updated adapter guidance to describe handling of complete external task inputs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Recognized external task-input envelopes in raw request bodies now become user messages during Responses tool-output repair. The conversion maps text and image content to Responses content items. Regression tests cover repair paths, passthrough, and routed compaction.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e7702

Raw-body repairs now preserve authorized external task input as a user turn, and the image-detail mismatch is corrected and tested. No actionable merge risk remains.

Thank you, @robin-bially! This fix landed on dev through the maintainer carry #6795 (squash commit 835dc5b), which credits you with a Co-authored-by trailer. The carry keeps external task input a user turn in both raw-body repairs and treats a non-empty string call_id as a tool result, which matches the schema parser. Issue #6764 stays open for the separate re-selection of completed tasks. Closing this PR as superseded by #6795.
